2018 Josephine Kponee Scholars Award Recipient

Mary Monday, 2nd year Law Undergraduate Student, Rivers State University, Rivers State Nigeria
Mary Monday is a 2nd year law student who has maintained a first class GPA ranking at her university, an incredibly challenging feat. Both of her parents stopped at the primary level of education, and other members of her family were unable to receive an education. Growing up, she was told that Law was something unapproachable for persons of her status. Mary’s pursuit of Law was based on her desire to be heard in society. She has always wanted to have a say in society, to be a part of those who impact and influence society to advocate for justice and equity.
Upon graduating, Mary hopes to attend Law School, after which she hopes to practice as a Lawyer. Given her passion for legal academia, she hopes to one day become a law professor. She also looks forward to partnering with organizations that provide free legal aid to members of the public to make legal services available to as many as possible, ensuring that justice is promoted in society.
The Josephine Kponee Scholars award will fund all subsequent years of Mary’s undergraduate education and provide her with an annual stipend.
