Favour Chinedu – 2019 Kponee-Shovein Scholars Award Recipient

Favour ChineduFavour Chinedu received the Scholars Award for the first time in 2019, as he entered his second year studying law at River’s State University. Favour’s academic credentials are impeccable and the depth and authenticity of his passion for education make an immediate impression. As the Foundation came to know him better through his essays and interviews, we realized how much disadvantage Favour has overcome in his life. He attributes his success to the persistent love of his mother, who must be a truly remarkable woman to have raised someone of such high character as Favour. Favour chose to study law because his observations of hardship and injustice, including the exclusion of women from property rights and the frequency that Nigerian criminal justice is misused as a tool to persecute the innocent. Favour’s combination of academic and moral qualities are much needed in the legal profession, and the Foundation is proud to support his education.

Lolia Onyekwere – 2019 Kponee-Shovein Scholars Award Recipient

Lolia Onyekwere

Lolia Onyekwere received the Scholars Award for the first time in 2019, as she entered her second year studying medicine at River’s State University. The Foundation was initially impressed by Lolia’s strong grades in her first year, and more so when we learned that she is one of seven children and has contributed to the support of her family while pursuing her education. Lolia is a careful, deliberate, and intelligent young woman with a maturity of moral conscience beyond her years. Studying medicine was initially an economic choice for Lolia, but in its practice she is discovering new perspectives on life and community—including through her work in the cadaver lab! She sets herself high goals, but consistently demonstrates the discipline necessary to achieve them. The Kponee-Shovein Foundation is proud to support Lolia’s education and is excited to see her future contributions to medicine, River’s state, and Nigeria!
